Context

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international independent medical and humanitarian action-driven organisation that offers assistance to populations in distress, to victims of natural or man-made disasters and to victims of armed conflict, without discrimination and irrespective of race, religion, creed or political affiliation. The MSF movement is built around 5 operational centres (OC) supported by 23 sections and offices worldwide. MSF in Greece provides humanitarian and medical assistance to the refugee and migrant populations fleeing conflict in their home countries.

Main purpose

Make the bridge between MSF and beneficiaries with the aim to improve the quality of the services offered fostering the removal of linguistic and cultural barriers and improve the access to health care and different services.

Contribute to the building of MSF visibility and acceptance by creating link with the communities. Provide MSF project with an understanding of local, socio-cultural determinants by knowing the culture of the beneficiaries and at the same time have developed reading capability of the context in which he/she should operate.

Support all required medical and non-medical activities within the project, by decoding the demand expressed by the beneficiaries and meeting MSF staff’s expectations of quality translation and communication.

Accountabilities

  • Assure the translation between the medical doctor/health care worker and the patient in his/her mother tongue, making the words of the medical team understandable to the patient and vice versa. The consultation is driven by the medical doctor.
  • Support patients’ orientation at the hospital entrance when needed.
  • Support translation of internal/external documents into the required languages.
  • Participate in creation of any material needed for communication.
  • Ensure confidentiality and medical secrecy.
  • Create an atmosphere of trust in the medical consultations and listen with empathy to the patients.
  • Accompany beneficiaries in case of referrals or assure follow-up if requested by medical staff in order to facilitate the provision of services.
  • Assure the translation between the psychologist and the patient in his/her mother tongue making the words of the mental health team understandable to the patient and vice versa. The individual consultations or group sessions are driven by the psychologist.

Requirements

  • Fluency in Somali is mandatory (spoken & written).
  • Good knowledge of English and/or Greek.
  • Previous working experience desirable, with MSF or other NGOs.
  • Desirable knowledge of Arabic or French.

Post conditions:

  • Part time position.
  • Annual gross salary: According to MSF Salary Policy.
  • Private insurance.
