Field Editor / Information Collection Officer - Lesvos

Job Title: Field Editor – Information Collection Officer

Shift Schedule: Flexible, considering the emergency context in Lesvos

Due to the emergency IRC will recruit qualified candidates filling the below criteria as they apply for the position.

BACKGROUND:

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Founded in 1933, the IRC offers lifesaving care and life-changing assistance to refugees forced to flee from war or disaster. At work today in over 40 countries, the IRC aims to restore safety, dignity and hope to millions who are uprooted and struggling to endure. In response to the arrival of refugees in Greece in 2015, the IRC has been offering SMS, WASH and Protection services. Refugee.Info is an innovative, first-of-its-kind project that harnesses social media to communicate with refugees and asylum-seekers, listen to their questions and provide information. Refugee.Info (RI) is the European instance of Signpost, a joint initiative launched in Greece by the International Rescue Committee and Mercy Corps in 2015 at the height of the European refugee crisis.

Position Summary:

As part of the editorial team, the Field Editor – Information Collection Officer is responsible for information collection, delivery and content creation on Lesvos following the latest incidents with Moria RIC being destroyed due to fires.

The role’s duties include collecting and assessing information needs in close coordination with the IRC programs on Lesvos, then researching, vetting and producing accurate and updated content to be published on the Refugee.Info suite of communication channels. As the information focal point for Lesvos, s/he is also responsible for maintaining close communication and collaboration with authorities in Lesvos as well as humanitarian actors.

The position will be line-managed by the Lesvos Area Manager and Refugee.Info Manager. S/he is both a part of the IRC Hellas Program team and the Refugee.Info editorial team. S/he will also have to conduct extensive outreach within the asylum seekers community/community leaders in Lesvos to ensure that information is reaching the end users of Refugee.Info too.

Responsibilities:

Content:

  • Gather, vet, condense and otherwise organize content delivered from information focal points and partners in Lesvos for dissemination through Refugee.Info channels and to IRC Hellas programs.
  • Coordinate with Refugee.Info Senior Content Development and Service Mapping Officer to create new content/services based on the collected information above so that information can reach users of Refugee.Info platforms and reduce gap of access to information.
  • Research and create written, photo and video content for Refugee.Info pages, social media, as assigned by Senior Content Development Officer and Refugee.Info Manager.
  • Regularly pitch ideas for new content and content updates to Senior Content Development Officer.
  • Network and liaise with authorities and humanitarian actors on Lesvos to ensure information is reaching Refugee.Info team early on, to be shared with the users of its platforms
  • Manage and enter content for the Refugee.Info site into content management systems.
  • Work with translators to ensure timely and accurate translations of content.
  • Conduct outreach in the field in a daily basis, adhering to humanitarian principles and security guidelines as provided by the Security Focal Points
  • Help ensure accuracy of services listed on the Refugee.Info service mapping tool for Lesvos amidst the emergency context.
  • Represent and/or promote Refugee.Info in interactions with partners and beneficiaries in Lesvos.

Team Collaboration:

  • Ensure close communication and coordination among IRC Hellas program staff and between IRC Hellas and Refugee.Info.
  • Collaborate with the editorial team to ensure consistency in information presented across all Refugee.Info platforms.
  • Work with editorial team to ensure that content is aligned with the content strategy and appropriate for publication.
  • Use online tools and other modes of communication to consistently share information with other members of the editorial team.
  • Participate in all editorial team meetings, workshops, strategy sessions, regular communications, etc., as established by the Senior Content Development Officer and the Refugee.Info Manager.

Success Factors:

The ideal Refugee.Info the Field Editor – Information Collection Officer is extremely proactive, detail-oriented and organized. S/he values accurate and error-free reporting. S/he is self-directed and reliably completes tasks. S/he is diplomatic and able to work with a range of peers to gather and verify information. S/he is tech- and social media-savvy and quick to learn new tools. S/he has good understanding of the context in emergency settings. S/he is good in networking and is familiar with the humanitarian ecosystem in Greece and Lesvos in particular. S/he has a strong commitment to teamwork and accountability and regularly seeks opportunities for collaboration and thrives in evolving and ambiguous environments.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • BA/BS or equivalent experience in journalism, communications or other relevant field
  • 2-5 years of reporting, writing and editing experience, including for online platforms and social media.
  • Video production and photo skills will be considered as an advantage.
  • Excellent oral and written English skills required; Greek strongly desired.
  • Native speakers of Arabic, Dari/Farsi, Urdu and/or Pashto encouraged to apply.
  • High level of tolerance for ambiguity.
  • Ability to learn quickly and proactively seek out information, assess trends/developments, and build relationships across diverse actors and contexts.
  • Ability to work well both within a team and independently, in a challenging, fast-paced, multicultural environment.
  • Candidates must be able to adapt to a changing context, feel comfortable working in unstable and insecure environments.
  • Ability to adapt journalistic ethics to a humanitarian context.
  • Familiarity with humanitarian principles; familiarity with refugee and migration issues in Europe.
  • Driver’s license.

Travel Requirements:

The position is based in Lesvos. Local travel in formal and informal camps, sites, areas of IRC operation will be required.

Eligibility

Must be eligible to work in Greece or the European Union.
