Laundry Attendant - Mytilene, Lesvos

JOB TITLE: Laundry Attendant
LOCATION: Mytilene
DURATION: 6 months

BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Founded in 1933, the IRC offers lifesaving care and life-changing assistance to refugees forced to flee from war or disaster. At work today in over 40 countries, the IRC aims to restore safety, dignity and hope to millions who are uprooted and struggling to endure.

In response to the arrival of refugees in Greece since 2015 IRC has been offering a wide range of services including services on Mental Health. As of February 2018 IRC has been implementing Mental Health and Psycho Social Support services to the residents of Moria RIC, in Lesvos. IRC aims to expand the range of services to include basic laundry service for its patients.

SCOPE OF WORK:

Brief description of the position’s role within the Project(s):

The laundry attendant will be responsible to coordinate with other colleagues of the Mental Health center to draft a schedule of wash cycles for the patients that are receiving Mental Health services.

Main objectives:

  • Through coordination with the other members of the team and taking into account time limitation, the Laundry Attendant will have to arrange a schedule of laundry and drying cycles on a daily basis so that patients who are entitled to the service bring their laundry and take them back clean and dry on the same day.
  • Keep accurate tracking of the laundry of different patients throughout the laundry/drying process so that they are not mixed with the laundry of others. In particular the attendant, will receive the laundry of each patient, segregate them in special nets to distinguish them from the laundry of others, load the washing machine and once cycle is completed place the laundry nets in the dryer. Once process is completed clothes of each patient will be labelled, placed in plastic bags and given back to the patients.

This position reports to the Mental Health Officer

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Adhere to the Code of Conduct, IRC Way Standards for Professional Conduct
  • Attend trainings organized by the IRC and/ or other organizations
  • Coordinate to design daily laundry schedule with other colleagues from the Mental Health center
  • Tracking maintenance and repairs on laundering equipment
  • Monitor the operation of the laundry and drying machines and report if any malfunction occurs
  • Ensure compliance of everyone (staff & patients) with the rules that will be implemented regarding access to the laundry service
  • Identify unforeseen needs for the implementation of the activity and report them to their supervisor
  • Appropriately handle any crises or issues that arise in the activity.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor to enable and develop IRC programs

Professional Standards

  • The laundry attendant is required to adhere tothe The IRC Way Standards for Professional Conductand the IRC country employment policies.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma
  • Ability to communicate in English/Greek orally and in writing is mandatory
  • Experience in a similar position will be considered a plus
  • Punctuality
  • Problem solving skills
  • Good tracking and organizational skills
  • Inventory skills
  • Decent command of Microsoft Office tools is desired
  • Sensitivity to and awareness of psychosocial issues is an advantage
  • Cross-cultural awareness and sensitivity
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Κnowledge of the following languages: Farsi/ Dari, French, Arabic will be considered a plus;
