Livelihoods Interpreter / Farsi Speaker - Athens

Title: Livelihoods Interpreter _ Farsi Speaker
Program: Economic Recovery and Development (ERD)
Base location: Athens
Reports to: Livelihoods Manager
Duration: fixed term, until January 31st, 2020
Type of employment: Part-time, 28 hours per week

Background TO IRC:

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Founded in 1933, the IRC offers lifesaving care and life-changing assistance to refugees forced to flee from war or disaster. At work today in over 40 countries, the IRC aims to restore safety, dignity and hope to millions who are uprooted and struggling to endure.

The IRC works in Greece from July 2015 responding and providing aid to refugees and migrants. The IRC’s programming in Greece currently focuses on Protection, Mental Health & PSS, Water and Sanitation & Economic Recovery & Development and in Athens, and Lesvos & Chios islands.

Scope of work:

IRC Greece supports vulnerable refugee and host communities in Athens to access income generation through employment and self-employment. Working through employment and business development service providers the IRC supports access to job counseling, legal counseling, job referral, life skills, vocational training, on the job training and microenterprise – directly and in collaboration with partners. Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Livelihoods Manager, the interpreter provides support interpretation services for career counselling sessions held with Farsi speakers who are clients of the Livelihoods program of the IRC. The Interpreter will also be responsible for interpretation in business, soft skills and job readiness training group trainings and the translation of relevant curriculum and outreach material.

Major responsibilities:

  • Assist in communication between IRC staff, other staff, beneficiaries and/ or any other relevant parties
  • Assist in documentation and referrals
  • Assist in collection of information and data and case identification
  • Provide interpretation during intake assessments and career counseling sessions
  • Provide interpretation for group trainings in job readiness, business and softs kills
  • Translate communication from English/Greek to Farsi including relevant curriculum or outreach material
  • Support Livelihoods activities wherever they take place
  • Conducting administrative duties as required

Position Reports to: Livelihoods Manager

Internal: Job Counselor, Microenterprise Counselor, Livelihoods Officer, Head of Programs

External: Partner staff

Other details:

This position will be based out of the IRC center in Athens, Greece, and may require occasional travel to other locations.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Translations, social sciences, or equivalent combination of education and work experience in an English speaking context.
  • Experience working at international development programs highly desirable
  • Experience in translation/ interpretation services, especially in group settings
  • Strong communication skills (written and spoken) in Farsi and ability to translate into English/ or Greek and vice versa
  • Understanding and sensitivity to the needs of people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure
  • Responsiveness to queries and referrals as and when needed and able to manage a varying workload
  • Cultural awareness and ability to build relationships quickly with a wide variety of people
  • Flexibility, openness to others, humanitarian motivation.
  • Training in interpretation or intercultural mediation is an asset
  • Experience of working with refugees and vulnerable groups of people is an asset

  • Maintain confidentiality
  • While in IRC sites, all IRC staff must wear appropriate IRC visibility.
