BACKGROUND:  

The MHPSS (Mental Health and Psycho Social Support) Community Outreach Officer will be primarly responsible for the dissemination of information to targeted communities on the provision of MHPSS-specific services and awareness raising around Mental health

SCOPE OF WORK:

Brief description of the position’s role within the Project(s):

The MHPSS Community outreach officer disseminates information regarding Mental health to targeted communities using a variety of methods (information sessions, drama, leaflets, information boards, etc.), as appropriate for the context. Messages are developed in collaboration with the psychologists, with the supervision of the Mental health and Psychosocial support manager, and will focus in raising awareness around MH after traumatic events and on ways to overcome mental health difficulties. Additionally the MHPSS community outreach officer will translate and act as cultural facilitator for the MHPSS team and if needed for the other IRC programs.

Position objectives:

  • To organize and carry out psycho-education activities directly into the refugee communities in order to promote mental health and wellbeing, delivered in a variety of ways and accessible to all community members.
  • To provide information about IRC mental health and psychosocial support activities
  • To identify and provide safe, confidential referrals of persons in need of mental health and psychosocial support and other services
  • To identify, promote and strengthen community engagement in the MHPSS activities.

Who this position reports to: MHPSS manager

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide mental health awareness sessions and information on the types of services available on a daily basis in targeted communities, using a variety of context-appropriate methods.
  • Provide information to the affected population on mental health issues after traumatic events and on ways to deal with mental health difficulties. Facilitate psychoeducation sessions to ensure that refugees can recognize the common symptoms of emotional distress, can recognize the impact of violence, and promote healthy social-emotional and cognitive development.
  • Facilitate community-based support networks and encourage the creation of peer support groups aimed at addressing local mental health needs, promoting wellness, addressing issues of division/conflict and reducing stigma against mental health issues
  • Develop messages on how communities can support each other and on positive cultural appropriate coping mechanisms.
  • Implement supportive psychosocial activities in the community targeting specific groups (elderly, children, etc)
  • Build and maintain relationships with communities, including local leaders, community-based groups and other stakeholders.
  • Visit regularly the communities that are under the responsibility according the schedule
  • Work with the psychologists and other IRC staff to exchange information and ensure that IRC programs are responding to the evolving needs of communities.
  • Ensure that all people attending psycho-education activities are treated in a professional manner
  • Monitor the mental health of the population and the protection concerns in the area of responsibility
  • Identify among the affected population people with psychological difficulties, difficult coping process, or coping mechanisms or others who need more specialized MH support and refer appropriately
  • Provide PFA whenever needed
  • Collect information about mental health seeking behavior, cultural approaches to MH and coping mechanisms from the community
  • Translate for the MHPSS team and if needed for the other IRC programs
  • Ensure that confidentiality is maintained regarding all information transmitted and/or collected
  • Complete weekly activity reports, according to guidance provided by the Psychologist team leader and the MHPSS manager

Other

  • Participate in team meetings and trainings
  • Attend supervision sessions with the members of the team
  • Participate in other psychosocial activities if needed
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor to enable and develop IRC programs

Professional Standards

  • All IRC staff are required to adhere to THE IRC Way Standards for Professional Conduct and the IRC country employment policies.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Experience in community outreach, sensitization or mobilization
  • Excellent communication and social skills
  • Clear understanding of Mental health and psychosocial support issues
  • Demonstrated understanding of and ability to maintain confidentiality and respect for clients
  • Positive and professional attitude, including ability to lead and work well in a team setting
  • Strong ability to maintain composure, prioritize work under pressure, and work in a difficult environment
  • Fluency in English and/or Greek, with language skills in  Arabic or Farsi required
  • Familiarity with the cultural context will be considered a strong plus

Travel and other requirements: To and from the camps or sites of program implementation as needed.
