Description of the Organisation:

For more than 30 years, Médecins du Monde, a campaigning medical organization committed to international solidarity, has been caring for the most vulnerable populations at home and abroad. It has continued to highlight obstacles that exist in accessing health care and has secured sustainable improvements in health-for-all policies. Those working for this independent organization do not solely dispense care and treatment but condemn violations of human dignity and rights and fight to improve matters for populations living in precarious situations.

MdM currently works in 46 countries across all continents where it focuses on 4 priority areas: caring for the health of migrants and displaced persons, promoting sexual and reproductive health, combating HIV and reducing the harm and risks associated with drug use, crises and conflicts.

MdM Greece has been active in Greece for 25 years, developing quality of care , improving access and advocating for the right to health for all people. It also thrives to promote good management of the health facilities it supports.

Summary of the position:

MdM Greece seeks a midwife profile to join it’s growing and dynamic teams. This is an exciting position to work in a fixed or mobile medical unit in refugee camps in Greece, and bring significant support to the migrant reception crisis.

The Midwife will not only provide first hand quality care to patients, but take part in medical orders, collection and analysis of medical data, take part in exploration missions and in improving the set up of MdM’s mobile medical response. This position requires flexibility, as teams turn over regularly, and the context of intervention can change rapidly. The midwife must have the capacity to work autonomously, as well as in close collaboration with the gynecologist and with others health partners and on larger public health issues including Gender Based Violence and unwanted pregnancies. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to respond positively and constructively to a rapid changing operational environment. The midwife will work with the team in Thiva refugee camp.

Position of the function:

  • Is under direct hierarchical management of the Field Coordinator in charge in his/her duty station
  • Technically reports to SRH Referent

Position objectives and responsibilities:

  • In charge of the SRH activities in the camp and will work in close collaboration with the gynecologist (when she/he will visit the camp) in providing medical care to patients.
  • Provides comprehensive antenatal and postnatal care and emergency care according to national guidelines adapted to the project drug list.
  • Ensures, in close collaboration with the social worker, patient follow-up with health partners, patients discharged from hospital.
  • Identifies medical emergency cases and refer those to the GP and the local health structures.
  • In charge of Family Planning counseling and delivery of contraception methods including Emergency contraception
  • Coordinates adequate management of unwanted pregnancy
  • Actively contributes towards a holistic management of GBVs in close collaboration with local and international partners.
  • Gives advices and recommendations to patients (importance of good hygiene, health education, nutrition, breast-feeding etc.)
  • Follows-up and respects the correct medical waste management and hygiene measure during the care.
  • Ensures accurate data collection for all the SRH activities in collaboration with the data collector.
  • Participates in weekly narrative and structured reports as requested by the Field Coordinator.
  • Takes part, where necessary, in health assessments in mobile medical teams
  • Takes part in ordering drugs and medical consumables
  • Leads on developing and carrying out public health messaging important for camp residents, based on observations in consultation. This is done in line with doctors and field coordinator.
  • Sets high standards regarding quality of work
  • Ensures patients’ confidentiality
  • Works in humanitarian crisis situation complying with humanitarian principles and standards
  • Attends and participates in program and team meetings as scheduled
  • Follows security protocols
  • Embraces any other responsibilities assigned by the Field Coordinator for the fulfilment of the Program objectives

Studies:

  • Midwife state diploma

Experience:

  • At least 2 years of experience as a midwife

Competencies:

  • Willing to work in team and multicultural context
  • Flexibility and able to work under pressure
  • Excellent listening and communication skills
  • Committed to MdM’s values as an Organization and motivated by its non-statutory, NFP model
  • Languages: Greek English fluent (written, spoken) mandatory. Farsi, Arabic considered an asset
