About CRS:

Catholic Relief Services (CRS) was founded in 1943 by the US Catholic Conference of Bishops States to assist the poor and vulnerable overseas. CRS has been working in Greece since 2015 in response to the refugee and migrant crisis, working in partnership with the national and local diocesan Caritas organizations in Greece.

CRS has been awarded to put into practice an integration project called Curing the Limbo, aiming to implement a dynamic and innovative model for integration that allows refugees to become socially active. This can be achieved through attending courses in Greek, English, Creative Expression and ICT, gaining access to affordable housing, and receiving professional counseling services tailored to their needs. Refugees are thus integrated in the life of the city, by interacting with active citizen groups and participating in public events held in the neighbourhoods of Athens. In coming together, the refugees and the city exit their “limbo” state, boosting activity, cooperation, and co-existence.

Curing the Limbo (2018-2021) is a European pilot program of the city of Athens implemented with the strategic partnership of the University of Athens, the Catholic Relief Services (CRS), the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and the Athens Development and Destination Management Agency (ADDMA). This project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund through the Urban Innovative Actions (UIA) initiative.

Job Summary:

The primary role of the Cultural Mediator is to communicate directly with program beneficiaries in Farsi.

Roles and key Responsibilities:

  • Provide translation and cultural mediation services for all project staff, as required
  • Work closely with project colleagues acting as an interpreter for refugees and necessary service providers.
  • Participate in activity planning and community mobilization
  • Support interventions aimed at increasing autonomy of refugees by conveying information on practical aspects of living in Greece.
  • Work closely on a daily basis with project staff and beneficiaries.
  • Support to the entire project implementation team.
  • Other tasks as required by the HFU Manager to support implementation of HFU’s activities.

Basic Qualifications:

  • High School diploma required.
  • Excellent command of spoken and written Farsi and English and/or Greek
  • Minimum of 3 years of work experience in project support. Experience in the field of Cultural Mediation and for an NGO would be a plus.
  • Additional education may substitute for some experience; additional experience may substitute for some education.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Analysis and problem-solving skills with ability to make sound judgment
  • Good relationship management skills and the ability to work closely with local partners
  • Proactive, results-oriented and service-oriented
  • Attention to details, accuracy and timeliness in executing assigned responsibilities

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with partners, participatory action planning and community engagement.
  • Experience using MS Windows and MS Office packages (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills, multitasking and performing well under pressure.
  • Ability to negotiate, mediate and interpret on behalf of service users.
