Background/IRC Summary: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Founded in 1933, the IRC offers lifesaving care and life- changing assistance to refugees forced to flee from war or disaster. At work today in over 40 countries, the IRC aims to restore safety, dignity and hope to millions who are uprooted and struggling to endure. In response to the influx of refugees in Greece, The IRC Hellas has been working in Lesvos since June 2015.

Job Overview/Summary: IRC is looking for a Senior Site Officer (SSO) to overview the implementation of IRC’s projects in the new Mavrovouni site, in Mytilene, Lesvos. Under the supervision of the Area Manager, the Senior Site Officer will be the focal point for all actors and the team leader of the whole team in Mavrovouni. S/He will be representing IRC towards authorities, actors and the community to ensure community acceptance, proper program implementation and safety and security of the team. . S/He will be based in Mavrovouni.

Also, he/she will participate in Coordination meetings, Communication & Community Engagement activities, follow up on Office or Maintenance activities and as a Safety and Security focal point, mainstreaming the SOPs and Protection compliance of members through all the activities.

The Senior Site Officer, will play an integral part in the field teams, ensuring that staff members are having access to all relevant information for the implementation of the projects while through weekly and monthly reports will keep the Senior Management Team up to date.

Field based, the role of this position includes overall support in the WASH, Child Protection, MHPSS, Refugee Info and all IRCs projects on field level, security management, liaising with authorities and other aid actors and supporting field members in developing messages for outreach, info provision, cultural mediation and community mobilization activities.

While technical support and the approval of changes to programming will continue to come from the different Managers per program, the Senior Site Officer will be involved in discussions regarding changes to programming in order to help support management and partners in identifying solutions to operational issues on the ground and helping to provide the bigger picture regarding realities within the site and relations with different actors.

Major Responsibilities:

Position objectives:

  • Represents the IRC at the site and s/he is the focal point of IRC for all external actors and the community.
  • Act as a team leader at Mavrovouni in coordination with the programmatic managers and the Area Manager.
  • Is the safety and security focal point of the IRC in Mavrovouni.
  • S/He finds solutions to facilitate the work of the staff members in Mavrovouni.
  • Oversees the conduct of the IRC’s staff in Mavrovouni (behavior, visibility, IDs, timing etc).
  • Participates in coordination and other meeting as required and feeds back to the organization.
  • Coordinates IRC visits.
  • Compiles reports as required.
  • Is in charge of the IRC’s workspace in Mavrouvouni and its maintenance.

  • Some exposure to the refugee situation in Greece required

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The candidate must be prepared to spend extended working hours in what may be adverse weather conditions or stressful environments in difficult settings, often standing or moving around for long periods of time.

  • All IRC staff are required to adhere to THE IRC Way Standards for Professional Conduct and the IRC country employment policies.

  • While in resettlement site, all IRC staff must wear appropriate IRC visibility as determined by the safety and security protocols.

In accordance with these values, the IRC operates and enforces policies on Beneficiary Protection from Exploitation and Abuse, Child Safeguarding, Anti Workplace Harassment, Fiscal Integrity, and Anti-Retaliation.
