Job Title: WPE Arabic Interpreter/ Cultural Mediator
Location: Athens, Greece
Type of Contract: fixed term from 1/2/2020 – 31/5/2020
Type of Employment: Part-time, 18 hours per week, working on different working hours, based on program needs

BACKGROUND

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is one of the largest humanitarian agencies in the world, providing relief, rehabilitation and post-conflict reconstruction support to victims of oppression and violent conflict. Contextual background

IRC Hellas seeks to restore the dignity of refugees and to enhance their physical and psychological safety through the provision of tailored and targeted response services. At the core of our approach is the IRC’s Women’s Protection and Empowerment (WPE) programming in Greece. After delivering direct WPE services from 2015 to 2017 in camps across Greece, in 2018, the IRC focused on building the capacity of government institutions, municipalities and local organisations, by delivering interdisciplinary Gender –Based Violence (GBV) trainings that focused on case management and enhancing coordination among service providers.

In September 2018, the launch of the SURVIVOR project for engaging services for refugee and migrant women survivors of GBV, brought together key state institutions, namely the General Secretariat for Family Policy and Gender Equality and ‘KETHI’ (National Research Centre for Gender Equality) with the civil society actors CRWI Diotima and IRC, Hellas to implement a joint project. They were joined by EU consortium partners in Bulgaria, in France, Italy and Germany aimed at enhancing the quality of and access to services for refugee and migrant GBV survivors in Greece, including communication with refugee and migrants communities in Greece for protection referrals to existing services and at strengthening GBV programming through transnational dialogue and sharing of GBV best practices, resources and tools in Greece and Europe.

SCOPE OF WORK: Under the guidance and supervision of the WPE Community Engagement Officer, the Interpreter/Cultural Mediator will provide interpretation & translation support services on individual and group activities and communications, internal and external appointments, translation of documents etc. S/he will be working closely with the WPE officer, including the GBV Specialist.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with translation, interpretation and cultural mediation in communication beneficiaries and/ or any other relevant parties;
  • Assist with interpretation and cultural mediation during the Focus Group Discussions (FGD), WPE trainings and follow up meetings with beneficiaries, building activities organized by the WPE team, whenever needed;
  • Translate from English into Arabic and vice versa necessary WPE materials or written information as required;
  • Complete any reporting and monitoring tool, as required;
  • Conduct administrative duties as required;
  • Any other duty as assigned by the supervisor.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Translations, humanities, social sciences, or equivalent combination of education/training and work experience in a similar context;
  • Experience in interpretation and translation services is required;
  • Certification in cultural mediation is considered as an advantage;
  • Experience working with women and youth highly desirable;
  • Experience working in NGOs and in the humanitarian context is highly desirable, Experience of working with refugees and vulnerable groups of people;
  • Fluency and good working level in English is mandatory;
  • Strong communication skills (written and spoken) in Arabic and ability to translate into English and vice versa;
  • Knowledge of one of the following languages is considered as an asset: Greek and French;
  • Able to work in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams;
  • Understanding and sensitivity to the needs of people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures;
  • Personal qualities: Team player, responsive, flexible, network-builder, able to handle pressure well and work in Understanding and sensitivity to the needs of people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures;
  • Strong sense of personal integrity;
  • Cultural awareness and ability to build relationships quickly with a wide variety of people;
  • Computer skills: Knowledge of MS Office, Internet, Outlook and competency with new technologies required

OTHER:

  • Must be able to work flexible hours according to WPE scheduled activities.
  • Must successfully complete criminal background check;
