Location: home-based, with regular meetings at the Ministry of Health, and the UNICEF Greece Country Office

About ICMC
The International Catholic Migration Commission (ICMC) is an international non-governmental organization, whose mission is to protect and serve children as well as uprooted people, including refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced people, victims of human trafficking, and migrants - regardless of faith, race, ethnicity, or nationality.
ICMC started a partnership with UNICEF in Greece in order to deploy a highly qualified affiliated workforce to assist UNICEF Greece Country Office.
Scope of work
The fundamental mission of UNICEF is to promote the rights of every child, everywhere, in everything the organization does – in programme, in advocacy and in operations. The equity strategy, emphasizing the most disadvantaged and excluded children and families, translates this commitment to children’s rights into action.
UNICEF became operational in Greece in early 2016 as an outposted team from the Regional Office of Europe and Central Asia (ECARO) to respond to the significant influx of refugee and migrant children and their families at that time. Following several years of engagement with national stakeholders, UNICEF and the Government of Greece made a decision in January 2020 to formalize the agency’s presence in the country as a full-fledged Country Office. The office falls under the auspices of the UNICEF Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia located in Geneva, which supports the work of 22 Country Offices within its geographical scope, reporting in turn to global headquarters in New York. Within the framework of a mandate for all children in Greece, UNICEF and Greece are now working to address the needs of all vulnerable, marginalized and left-behind children in the country.
In 2022, Greece was ranked last among European Union (EU) member states in the European Institute’s for Gender Equality (EIGE) Gender Equality Index (2022), with 53.4 out of 100 points (value one represents total inequality while 100 represents total equality), however improvement has been noted by 1.2 points compared to 2020. Greece’s ranking on the 2023 Global Gender Gap Report has improved only slightly, ranking 93rd out of 146 countries (opposed to 98th out of 156 countries in 2021) with a score of 0.693 (0.00 indicates gender imparity while 1.00 gender parity). However, in UNDP’s Gender Inequality Index (2021), Greece performs better (ranking 32nd out of 162 countries) with value 0.119 (GII ranges between 0 and 1 and higher GII values indicate higher inequalities between women and men) and in the OECD’s Social Institutions and Gender Index (2023), Greece is categorized as a country with low gender inequality, receiving a score of 18.9 overall out of 100 points (zero denotes no discrimination and 100 denotes full discrimination), improving by almost 8 points from 2019.
In light of the above, the incumbent is therefore expected to support UNICEF Greece CO for the implementation of the National Action Against Childhood Obesity through the provision of technical assistance and oversight on gender equality, as well as through know-how knowledge exchange in gender programming, and through collaboration with state and CSO partners on planning for the implementation of gender equality related goals and targets.
The incumbent will be working with the Programme Team on Programmes in collaboration with the Ministry of Health in UNICEF GCO reporting directly to the Child Protection Specialist (Project Coordinator). She or he will work in close collaboration with all sectors and contribute to the overall mainstreaming and reporting on gender results, with emphasis on the National Action Against Childhood Obesity, as well as under other programmatic priorities as needed.
