Career Counselor - Athens

Background to IRC

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Founded in 1933, the IRC offers lifesaving care and life-changing assistance to refugees forced to flee from war or disaster. At work today in over 40 countries, the IRC aims to restore safety, dignity and hope to millions who are uprooted and struggling to endure.

The IRC works in Greece from July 2015 responding and providing aid to refugees and migrants. The IRC’s programming in Greece currently focuses on Protection, Mental Health & PSS, Water and Sanitation & Economic Recovery & Development in Athens, Lesvos & Chios islands.

Scope of work:

IRC Greece together with the Network for Children’s Rights along with the theatrical group Laughter’s Guild implement the holistic project PROSVASIS with the aim to empower unaccompanied teens, young refugees and migrants between 16-24 years old. The program provides a well-rounded package of services that includes psychosocial and legal support, job counselling, access to education, educational and non-formal training opportunities. Working through employment the IRC supports access to job counseling, career guidance and job referral as well as intensive life skills trainings and registration to formal and informal vocational programs and trainings.

The IRC is recruiting a Job Counselor to be responsible for assisting clients with career counseling and training. The Job Counselor will also be responsible for delivering life skills training to unaccompanied teens, young refugees and migrants as well as vulnerable host populations while ensuring that clients are prepared to access and thrive in the Greek labor market.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide intake and assessment for clients seeking employment services and career guidance
  • Assist clients explore professional and educational opportunities in Greece and/or gather necessary documents to ensure access to the job market
  • Assist clients individually & in group career coaching sessions in order to develop a career pathway
  • Provide one-on-one career services. Help clients develop a, professional CV and cover letter, to identify relevant employment opportunities and provide overall support throughout the professional job search
  • Conduct life skills and job readiness group training sessions to help clients gain life and market relevant skills
  • Prepare clients for job interviews and employment orientations
  • Job match clients with vacancies and opportunities
  • Assist clients with enrollment in post-secondary, recertification programs and non-formal and formal vocational training opportunities in line with client needs.
  • Research potential industries, employers, training programs and trends in Athens workforce
  • Support the business outreach process and represent organization in external job fairs and networking meetings

Program Coordination Responsibilities:

  • Propose and develop other support services that serve the program goals and client’s needs
  • Maintain an accurate and up-to-date management system, case notes and other electronic files
  • Work with the Livelihoods Manager to develop training curricula that are up-to-date, meet training objectives and are being effectively and uniformly implemented
  • Support referral pathways from IRC to other employment, business development and vocational training providers
  • Any other task designated by the Livelihoods Manager as requested.

Coordination and Administration:

  • Coordinate closely with IRC logistics, finance, and grant staff to ensure timely and compliant program activities and expenditures
  • Coordinate with partner organizations and participate in regular team and partners meetings.
  • Work constructively within the team and take initiative on new tasks
  • Prepare purchase requests as needed for program.
  • Maintain program files and regularly update monitoring databases

Key Working Relationships:

Position Reports to: Livelihoods Manager

Other Internal and/or external contacts:

Internal: Program Coordinator, Microenterprise Counselor, Livelihoods Officer, Grants Department, ERD Technical Unit, Supply Chain, Finance, HR, Research Evaluation and Learning Technical Unit.

External: Program partner organisations, relevant working groups, local and national government entities such as OAED, Chambers of Commerce, businesses and business development entities, peer and partner agencies

Other details:

This position will be based out of the IRC center and our partners offices in Athens, Greece, and may require occasional travel to other locations.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor Degree in a related field, master’s degree a plus
  • At least 2 year experience providing employment services with excellent performance and demonstrated ability to serve a case load and perform cross-cutting tasks that support the team
  • Demonstrated experience with the Greek job search process and the ability to effectively coach clients through the nuanced process of securing career path employment
  • Experience implementing group trainings with adolescents and youth adults is desirable
  • Knowledge of career path options, especially those paths accessible to immigrants
  • Knowledge of available educational and vocational training options for adolescents and youth adults
  • Proven ability to work with consideration and respect for cross-cultural differences
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with adolescents and youth adults
  • Excellent communication skills, with fluency in written and spoken Greek and English
  • Computer skills, in particular Excel
  • Very strong organization and interpersonal skills
  • Enthusiasm for helping people, especially adolescents and youth adults, to learn and demonstrated professionalism
