Senior Communications Officer - Athens

TITLE: Senior Communications Officer

PROGRAM: Economic Recovery and Development (ERD)

BASE LOCATION: Athens

REPORTS TO: Senior Livelihoods Manager

DURATION: 6 months with possibility of extension (start date: September 1st, 2021)

TYPE OF EMPLOYMENT Part-time (15 hours per week)

BACKGROUND TO IRC

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Founded in 1933, the IRC offers lifesaving care and life-changing assistance to refugees forced to flee from war or disaster. At work today in over 40 countries, the IRC aims to restore safety, dignity and hope to millions who are uprooted and struggling to endure. In response to the arrival of refugees in Greece in 2015, the IRC has been offering SMS, WASH, Livelihoods and Protection services to children, women and people in need of mental health support. IRC Hellas currently has offices in Athens and on Lesvos, Chios and Samos.

SCOPE OF WORK

IRC Hellas supports vulnerable youth refugee and host communities in Athens to access income generation through employment and self-employment services, directly and in collaboration with partners. The project is a part of the IRC’s Resilient Futures III program which is supported by the Citi Foundation’s Pathways to Progress initiative, aiming to support young people, migrants and people from vulnerable social groups in business education and employment programs in Greece, Jordan, Nigeria, Germany, Cameroon and Lebanon to gain financial independence.

The IRC is recruiting a Senior Communications Officer in Athens who will focus on communications around the Resilient Futures III program in Greece. The position will lead on information and communication products to engage internal and external stakeholders on Resilient Futures activities with refugees and host communities in Athens. The Senior Communications Officer will work closely with the IRC Livelihoods team in Athens, the global IRC communications team and external partners in Greece to collate, analyze and share information and tailor communication products and messages to various audiences.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Major Responsibilities

  • Working with the Senior Livelihoods Manager, the global communications team, and local external partners, develop and implement an in-country communication plan, ensuring IRC policies and protocols are appropriately reflected;
  • With the Senior Livelihoods Manager and Communications Partnerships Manager, work directly with IRC clients in the Resilient Futures program to develop communications materials (e.g. media stories, photographs, video footage for external news outlets and social media) to raising project visibility via earned media and across IRC digital channels.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to profile the program in Greek media, lead on outreach to press, and respond to journalist enquiries in a timely manner to meet external deadlines; provide background information, arrange interviews and facilitate visits as required.
  • Lead the creation of communication materials, content, and products on behalf of the Resilient Futures project team in Greece (e.g. fact sheets, case studies, powerpoints, graphics, social media content, and newsletters) aimed at raising awareness about the project with key stakeholders.
  • Work alongside global communications colleagues, the IRC Hellas team and advocacy colleagues to develop appropriate messaging around the Resilient Futures program.
  • Act as a focal point for communications with Resilient Futures local partners and ensure alignment with the implementation of communications deliverables.
  • Support event management for the program, including online and offline events;
  • Support research and writing of briefing materials and advocacy papers in coordination with the Advocacy Manager and Advocacy Officer;
  • Conduct other duties as the needs arise.

Key Working Relationships:

Position Reports to: Sr Livelihoods Manager with dual reporting line to Communications Partnerships Manager.

Other internal and/or external contacts:

  • Internal: IRC country program staff and relevant IRC regional and headquarters Communications units
  • External: Citi focal points, local partner communications focal points

Other details:

This position will be based out of the IRC center in Athens, Greece, and may require occasional travel to other locations.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Degree in a relevant subject, or equivalent experience as a journalist or media professional;
  • Experience/knowledge of developing and implementing PR/Media strategies;
  • Experience in external and/or internal communication in the NGO sector or any other large organization;
  • Good contacts with key Greek and European journalists and media outlets, and knowledge and ability to develop relationships quickly;
  • Good understanding of the local context;
  • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills; adept at writing clean, engaging and jargon-free copy for a range of channels;
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to establish positive working relationships with colleagues;
  • Good organisational and time management skills and the ability to work to deadlines, prioritise and multi-task in a fast paced environment;
  • Proficiency in Greek and English required;
  • Proactive approach to problem solving to meet journalist and organisational demands.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of key debates in Greece and Europe around refugee and migrant integration issues;
  • Experience of dealing with media enquiries into crisis or sensitive issues;
  • Strong photography skills, and experience of editing audio and visual materials
